You don’t need a jet to get to the Caribbean. Just stop by the Kingston Cafe on South Fair Oaks and you’ll see that a taste of the tropics exist right here in Pasadena. The restaurant’s been in business for almost two decades, with a prolonged hiatus for refurbishing and expansion that ended sometime last year. Until recently, I couldn’t guarantee the nights there were as gay at the Kingston Café as they are in Jamaica (I’d only been there for lunch), but a week ago, we ventured into the “new and improved” Kingston Café and went away even more impressed than we had been with our daytime meals in years past…

For those that have visited our restaurant and sauntered into our main dining room have had the pleasure of viewing the one and only Gino Perez’ artwork. We’ve provided Gino’s official biography below, and we hope to see you soon in person to experience his brand new mural now featured on the patio:

Gino Perez is a Los Angeles Native with Mexican and Native American roots. From the time he was born he was surrounded by art. His mother is an artist and seamstress. His father, and artist as well, spent much of Gino’s early life in jail and battling addiction.

Growing up in Highland Park with four sisters and a brother, Gino countered his humble beginnings by immersing himself in his love for skateboarding. By age 17 he was traveling the world as a professional with such notables as Mark Gonzales.

It was on his travels that Gino came into contact with the works of Picasso, Miro and Basquiat, whose pieces inspired him along with those of his own parents as he started drawing and painting.

He soon extended his art into clothing and skateboard design, most recently creating wearable art for the Trapo boutique, designer Tatiana Peter, Dim Mak records, and numerous bands. His also held in many high-end boutiques in Los Angeles and New York.

Gino’s works are both timely and timeless – social commentaries that are as much a public call to arms as they are contemplative and private. His half full approach to the cynical is most evident in his writings, which are at once quick-witted and ponderous.

His genuine expression and everyday creative approach to life have earned him a following among local art and fashion enthusiasts. This fine collection of work is pur and true to his theory of life: “Live for today, art for Pete’s sake. The grey area is where we belong”
